Apple sets a date for its iPhone 6 debut

Apple confirms Sept. 9 event, likely to debut iPhone 6

Apple likely to debut iPhone 6 on Sept. 9

Apple has sent out invitations to journalists and technology industry insiders on Thursday, marking September 9, 2014 as the date that the Cupertino tech giant may unveil iPhone 6 and some wearable technology.

This annual event has become a ritual for the iPad and iPhone maker since 2007 when Apple released its first iPhone, and this year all eyes will be locked on a new iPhone with a bigger than 4-inch display.

Media reports have also speculated that Apple will roll out its first smartwatch to compete with other tech titans in this wearable technology arena. Taiwan’s ASUS and South Korea’s Samsung have all rolled out a similar product or products over the past few years.

Industry watchers are also hoping that the Sept. 9 announcement will make a bigger splash than the event that took place a year ago when Apple introduced iPhone 5S and 5C. Those two handsets were seen as two of the weakest product releases by the Cupertino company in recent years.

Shares of Apple inched up slightly to close at an all-time high on the invitation announcement on Thursday.
