Most of us know the story well.  Some of us were even glued to the news when the entire disaster happened 5 years ago, then we all cried our hearts out when the incident was blessed with a happy ending.

The movie ‘33,’ directed by Patricia Riggen, had it all except the authenticity of the Chilean miners in the story. Many actors in the cast were some of today’s most well-known Spanish speaking actors in Hollywood. Besides Juliette Binoche, I am pretty sure most of them could have bettered their performance by portraying their roles by speaking Spanish.

By giving the audience that authentic manners and culture that could only be conveyed in the Spanish language, I think this movie would have been much better.

This true story was filled with too much human emotions and raw cultural interactions to be interpreted in anything but. It was ruined by a cast that’s too Hollywood and dialogues that were too… may I say it in the most politically correct way… white-washed.

Overall, it was simply mediocre. Catch it only when it becomes available on Netflix in a few months.
